Runescape earns Jagex £38 million in 12 months

Free-to-play MMO Runescape earned its developer-publisher Jagex over £38.4 million in revenues in the 12 months leading up to March 2009. That's a profit of £18 million, according to records held at Companies House.

The figures were unearthed by Games Brief, and go some way to showing that free-to-play models can still be hugely profitable for companies that handle the method correctly. As Games Brief's Nicholas Lovell points out, Jagex's revenues demonstrate a 47 per cent operating margin in spite of the tens of millions spent on Mechscape, which was famously cancelled, or at least re-appropriated.

Runescape does offer a more complete game experience for those who pay, but so substantial is the free offering, 90 per cent of the MMO's 10 million monthly unique users choose to play the free version

Forums Reshuffle

During the last year or so, it has become apparent that our forums are just too busy and fast-moving for most of our forum-users’ needs. This can lead to frustrations such as spending a long time creating a thread only for it to disappear off the forums after a couple of days, or threads receiving lots of ‘spam’ or off-topic posts from people who are less invested in a particular discussion.

As a result, we have created communities within the forums based on your in-game levels and membership status. To start with, there are three member communities and one free-to-play communities. Each of these forum communities enables players with similar in-game levels to discuss tactics and general game discussions relevant to their levels.

In addition to the new communities, there are still shared forums accessible by all players, where you’ll be able to meet with your clan mates, organise events and roleplaying, trade, and ask other players for help. We will be looking to offer more forums to our growing language communities.

We are planning to gradually bring more free-players into the forum community, so that they too can join in and get involved with organising events and contributing to general game discussions and advice. We may also look to create more forum communities in the future.

All of these changes should help to improve the pace of the forums, but, most importantly, improve your experience on our forums by creating like-minded communities with similar levels of knowledge and experience. Maybe you’ll even make some new friends in the process!

Live Dungeoneering Q&A

It’s been a week now since Daemonheim first opened its gates and we began battling our way though those mysterious catacombs, and there are undoubtedly a few questions you’d like answered. Perhaps you have questions regarding the titles you can earn, or perhaps you have a query about how exactly those rewards operate. Well, now’s your chance to ask the developers.

In order to answer your queries, the Dungeoneering skill’s lead developers will be heading to the forums at 6pm (BST/forum time) tomorrow (that's Wednesday 21st April) – that’s Mod Trick, Mod Liono, Mod Chris L and Mod Benny. They’ll do their best to answer any questions that you have about Dungeoneering. Links to the question and answer threads will be added to this newspost before the event begins.

This is the first time we’ve put on a live Q&A session with the lead developers right after the release of a piece of content, so this is a fantastic opportunity to ask those questions you’ve always wanted to know the answers to! The Q&A will be running for a full two hours, so make sure you don’t miss out on this event.

RuneScape 2010 Easter event, factory management minigame walkthrough and slideshow

In the RuneScape 2010 Easter Event, RuneScape players need to help the Easter bunny in three ways. The factory needs preparation, then the factory must be managed, then the orders delivered. This article focuses on managing the factory. For the main walkthrough, refer to RuneScape 2010 Easter Event slideshow walkthrough. See RuneScape factory preperation slideshow for a detailed walkthrugh on fixing the factory.
Managing the factory in the 2010 Easter event is actually like a minigame. RuneScape players need to speak with the Easter bunny and an interface will come up.
Five workers are given to the RuneScape player, who can then hire more workers. Each worker hired costs the RuneScape player two resources. A worker can generate a resource, make a product, or fix machinery. A resource is spent for every five workers employed per turn; hence having nine instead of ten workers could be advantageous.
The three resources are nuts, chocolate, and fruit. Resources are used to hire workers, pay workers, and make products.
The three products each take two resources to make. Fruit cake uses one fruit and one chocolate. Tangy Egg bread uses one fruit and one nuts. Nutty eggs use one nuts and one chocolate. (Making one of each uses two of each resource.) The goal is to make seven of each resource.
There are three possible random events that are displayed at the end of a turn. An accident can cost three resources. Three extra resources can also be found. Or a machine can break, requiring fixing. To fix a machine, either put a worker on it or fix it manually. Fixing a machine manually requires exiting the interface, repeating that machine’s preparation phase fixing, then talking to the Easter bunny and opting to resume managing.
Although RuneScape players have unlimited turns, RuneScape players seeking to finish with the lowest score need to finish in 15 turns for a score bonus as well as an enhancement to the reward. The game can be restarted from the beginning if it has gone sour.
When the machine is complete, talk to the Easter bunny to complete the delivery phase and receive the reward. See 2010 easter event delivery slideshow walkthrough.

Armies of Gielinor Story Competition

Over the last month, players have been battling to prove that their pen is mightier than the longsword by writing short stories based on either the Zamorak or Saradomin campaigns for our Armies of Gielinor story competition. By the time the competition closed we’d received well over a thousand entries, which meant that picking the winners was going to be no mean feat! Finally, though, we managed it and are happy to announce the recipients of lifetime membership for their RuneScape accounts.
After much debate, the judges decided that the best Zamorak campaign-inspired story was entered by celticqueen8, whose story really impressed all the judges due to its humour and originality. Dimitrix is a very worth runner-up thanks to a song which made him stand out from the crowd.
Meanwhile, the judges’ favourite Saradomin campaign-inspired entry came from Lunestruck, whose wildly imaginative story really captured the attention of the judges. The runner-up in that category was roleutrio.
Congratulations to you all!
You can find all the winning stories on the FunOrb and RuneScape forums. We’ll also be adding some more of the best stories to our forums and our official Facebook page over the course of the month.
We’d like to take this opportunity to offer our sincere thanks to everybody who entered. It’s been a pleasure to be a part of such a wonderful contest!

The Theme Park of RuneScape

WHAT FOLLOWS WAS AN APRIL FOOLS' JOKE, RELEASED ON APRIL FOOL'S DAY. WE HAVE LEFT IT HERE IN ITS ENTIRETY FOR THOSE WHO WANT TO SEE WHAT ALL THE FUSS WAS ABOUT...

Has there ever been a worse kept secret? As early as 2007, observant RuneScape fans have been avidly watching Google Maps for the construction progress of our latest adventure: Wet ‘n’ Wildy, the RuneScape theme park!

That’s right, at the end of 2010, we will formally be opening our doors and portculli, allowing you all to come and meet your favourite personalities, experience the thrills of living in RuneScape, and even sample its varieties of cheese.

We still have a few details to confirm, so this is where you come in: we want you to vote in the poll, on the front page of RuneScape.com, and offer your thoughts on prices, rides and plush toys.

We wouldn’t ask for your help without giving something in return, so please click on the image link below to view the RuneScape Wet 'n' Wildy visitor map, hot off the press. We can also offer a blog, accessed from the bottom-right of the RuneScape.com frontpage, which gives insight into how such a huge endeavour was tackled and brought to life, written by Mod Paupersen, our Wet ‘n’ Wildy project coordinator.

Looking forward to seeing you all on opening day!

Runescape Easter 2010 Guide - Even Trolls Love Easter!

Runescape Easter 2010 Guide is here! Runescape Easter 2010 Guide proves even trolls love Easter. Know what the Easter bunny needs from you by checking out the Runescape Easter 2010 Guide.

The Runescape Easter 2010 Guide website for the Runescape Easter Event 2010 states in the introduction:

"A year has passed since Easter Bunny Jr. took over the family business and became responsible for the annual distribution of chocolate treats to the people of RuneScape.

He’s been busy all year, modernising the factory to meet increasing demand and making ambitious plans for the next Easter celebration. Alongside the usual plethora of sugary delights, the Easter Bunny plans to offer a range of alternatives, catering for the wide variety of cultures who celebrate Easter in their own way.

The Bunny’s heart is certainly in the right place, but logistical concerns have come second to his grand vision and now he’s struggling to meet his orders. He needs your help to get things back on track and make this Easter the best yet."

Take charge of Easter with the Runescape Easter 2010 guide!
